Questions to Ask A Potential Roommate

Whether you’re bunking with your best friend or a stranger you found on Craigslist, prepare a list of desires, questions and dealbreakers to discuss before you decide to move in together. (Obviously, if you’re living with a friend it spares you the FBI-background-check-style questions that you’ll use with a potential roomie you don’t know.)

1 Do you smoke? Do you mind if I smoke? Will we allow others to smoke in the house? My recommendation: No smoking inside, even if you smoke. It’s foul-smelling and leaves a thin residue of soot on everything.

2 What sort of hours do you keep? Having different schedules can be good because you’re not constantly up in each other’s grilles, but if your roommate’s getting up, showering and talking on the phone just as you’re trying to go to sleep, that’s a potential source of annoyance.
